The number of people who have died in the UK after testing positive for coronavirus has risen to 38,376 – an increase of 215 over 24 hours.

Culture secretary Oliver Dowden announced the updated figures – which are accurate as of 5pm on Friday – at the government’s daily coronavirus press conference.

Meanwhile, Dowden said another 2,445 positive test results were recorded in the 24-hour period up to 9am on Saturday, with almost 128,000 tests carried out or dispatched.

Overall, a total of 4,171,408 tests have been carried out in the UK and 272,826 cases have been confirmed positive.

Earlier in the day, NHS England announced the deaths 146 patients in hospital from the virus.

These patients were aged between 46 and 97 years old, officials said.

Six of these patients – aged between 46 and 91– had no known underlying health condition.
