The former Grand Wizard of the KKK has congratulated Donald Trump on his election as the 45th President of the United States.

David Duke, who backed Trump, said Tuesday was “one of the most exciting nights of my life”.

He claimed victory for his branch of sectarian politics, reacting to the election results announcement in a post on Twitter: “We have the moral high ground - 100%.”

GOD BLESS DONALD TRUMP! It's time to do the right thing, it's time to TAKE AMERICA BACK!!!#MAGA #AmericaFirst #LockHerUp #GodBlessAmerica pic.twitter.com/1mVrrs0kFF

He repeated the popular Trump chant of “lock her up”, in reference to some Republicans’ hope criminal proceedings will be bought against Hillary Clinton if Trump won the election.

This is one of the most exciting nights of my life -> make no mistake about it, our people have played a HUGE role in electing Trump! #MAGA pic.twitter.com/HvJyiJYuVa

Duke even posted a bizarre image of Trump, perched on top of a tank bearing his name, surrounded by fireworks, an eagle and the American flag.

He wrote: “Donald J Trump now has the chance to become one of the greatest Americans to have ever lived.”

Marine Le Pen, leader of France’s far-right National Front, also congratulated Trump for his shock victory in the early hours of Wednesday morning.

“Congratulations to the new president of the United States Donald Trump and to the free American people!” she said on Twitter.

The congratulations came as Trump scored an unlikely and historic win, taking at least 270 of the electoral college votes needed to win the Presidency.

The Republicans also took the US House and Senate.

Speaking at his victory rally in New York, Trump vowed: “I pledge to every citizen of our land that I will be president for all Americans, and this is so important to me.”
