Trump's Farewell Speech Was Everything You'd Expect It To Be: Petty, Threatening And Racist

The president's address was released to YouTube after many news channels refused to air it live.

On his way out of the seat of power, Donald Trump claimed credit for things he didnโ€™t do, twisted his record on jobs, taxes, the pandemic and much more. Falsehoods littered his farewell remarks to the country.

Twitter, his former playground โ€“ from which he is now banned for inciting rebellion in the aftermath of the Washington riot โ€“ was awash with reaction to the 20 minute address that was posted to YouTube and pointedly not carried live by many major networks.

Hereโ€™s what people made of it:

Biden who?

Trump could not bring himself to say Bidenโ€™s name once during the speech and nor will he attend the incoming presidentโ€™s inauguration. He has refused to publicly concede to Biden and spent the weeks after the election blaming his loss on widespread voter fraud that didnโ€™t exist.

Trump also pettily refused to send a government plane to fly Biden to Washington, leaving him to charter his own aircraft. His predecessor Barack Obama sent Trump an Air Force One-type jet for his familyโ€™s arrival to Washington.

trump refusing to mention biden in his farewell speech has the exact same energy as me refusing to look my sister in the eye to apologise after we got into fights when we were little

trump is a small, small man. Not just the hands. First he refuses to offer a military plane to bring Biden to DC, then exactly as Biden arrives, he starts his farewell speech.

What โ€˜movementโ€™?

Trump made clear he has no plans of going quietly into the night, telling his supporters that, as he prepares โ€œto hand power over to a new administration at noon on Wednesday, I want you to know that the movement we started is only just beginning.

โ€œThereโ€™s never been anything like it,โ€ he claimed.

Many felt unsettled by the outgoing presidentโ€™s decision not to elaborate on just what โ€œmovementโ€ he was referring to.

Donald Trump said his farewell like a villain that leaves the show in a cliffhanger and has a surprise for us in the next season. โ€œThe movement we started is only just beginning.โ€

โ€œThe movement we started is just beginningโ€ from Trumpโ€™s farewell address sounds a lot like a threat to me

Trumps farewell address is scary. "...the movement we started is only just beginning"

Trump noted Americans had been โ€œhorrifiedโ€ by the storming of the Capitol this month, but brushed past the encouragement he had given to the mob in advance and his praise of the attackers as โ€œvery special peopleโ€ while they were still ransacking the seat of power.

Priorities

Trump painted a glowing picture of the American economy in his final address, claiming โ€œmillions had been lifted from poverty in just a few short yearsโ€ in what he described as a โ€œmiracleโ€. He even made special mention of the advance of 401(k)s retirement and pension plans โ€“ before acknowledging the colossal 401,000 deaths of those who perished in the coronavirus pandemic.

The USA has the highest death toll in the world due to the virus.

In his farewell speech, President Trump mentioned 401(k)s before he mentioned the 401,000 people in the U.S. who have died of COVID-19.

โ€˜Luckโ€™

While Biden did not so much get a mention, Trump made a point of wishing the new administration โ€œluckโ€.

โ€œWe extend our best wishes. And we also want them to have luck โ€” a very important word.โ€

Many felt uncomfortable about the sentiment, with some even reading it as a veiled threat.

Anyone else notice how President Trump really made sure to pronounce and draw attention to the word "LUCK" in his farewell speech???

Am I the only one that thinks the Luck word in the speech from Trump was strange?

โ€” Angel (@Angel88762896) January 20, 2021

I think Trump put out a Code Word in his farewell speech. Just the way he said the word "Luck!" Just heard a piece of a clip.

โ€” YANEUSTAGE (@StageYaneu) January 20, 2021

Michael, Iโ€™m nervous about his saying โ€œgood luck, youโ€™ll need it. Itโ€™s an important word.โ€ It sounded like a threat and Trump had that sarcastic look. I think heโ€™s got something up his sleeve for today.

โ€˜Stood up to big pharmaโ€™

Trump has claimed to have brought prescription prices down after making it a core pledge of his 2016 campaign. He issued several executive orders in late 2020 meant to cut prices, but their impacts have been limited by legal challenges and other problems.

In his leaving speech he told Americans: โ€œWe created choice and transparency in healthcare, stood up to big pharma in so many ways, but especially in our effort to get favoured-nations clauses added, which will give us the lowest prescription drug prices anywhere in the world.โ€

Fact check: In December, a federal judge blocked a last-minute Trump administration rule aimed at lowering drug prices that was set to be implemented at the beginning of the year. It was challenged by drug industry groups including PhRMA, the nationโ€™s leading pharmaceutical trade group.

And many drug makers kicked off 2021 by raising US list prices on more than 500 drugs and include price increases from companies like Pfizer and GlaxoSmithKline.

This was not lost on people.

It's amazing that part of Trump's farewell speech is that he fixed pharma prices. https://t.co/nvUaIcB1UA

Maybe if Congress actually looked at Trumps initiative to lower drug prices. https://t.co/Gp7nTz2nWY

โ€˜We did what we came here to doโ€™

Trump made vague remarks about his administration doing โ€œwhat we came here to doโ€.

Fact check: He is leaving the White House with a less than exemplary record and he is the first president since Herbert Hoover in the Depression to leave office with fewer people in work than when he started.

Impacted by Covid, of course, the US has about 2.8 million fewer jobs now than when Trump was inaugurated, and lost 140,000 just in December. And the job losses have fallen disproportionately on Black Americans, Hispanics and women.

His comments also left the door open for people to speculate on what his comment might have meant...

"We did what we came here to do." -- Trump in his farewell speech.

So you came to the White House to cage and separate hundreds of innocent children from their families? To incite insurrection on the Capitol and interfere with the election? To kill 400,000+ Americans? Got it.

โ€˜China virusโ€™

Trump has repeatedly described Covid-19 as โ€œthe Chinese virusโ€ despite growing evidence it puts Asians at risk of virus-related racial discrimination.

Asked why, when scientists say the disease does not respect borders and is not caused by ethnicity, Trump told reporters at the White House that he does not consider it a racist remark.

โ€œItโ€™s not racist at all,โ€ Trump said, adding that he calls it the โ€œChinese virusโ€ because he wants to be accurate.

The fact that in Trumps farewell speech he still called it the โ€œChina virusโ€ is despicable beyond words. 11 1/2 more hrs and I can finally breathe fresh air. Empathy compassion and hope is right around the corner ty Biden/Harris๐Ÿ’œ

โ€” Tracie Accinno (@traciesjem) January 20, 2021

Trump is *still* saying "China Virus" in a pretty spiteful way.

โ€” david oliver (@mancunianmedic) January 19, 2021

Why the hell does D. Trump keeps calling the Coronavirus the "China Virus". Dude stop.

โ€” Adan Orellana ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ๐Ÿ‡ธ๐Ÿ‡ป (@adano937) January 20, 2021

He indicated his terminology was a warranted pushback to Chinese officials who have been suggesting the US military might have introduced the virus to Wuhan, the Chinese city where it was first reported in late 2019.

โ€œChina had tried to say at one point โ€” maybe they stopped now โ€” that it was caused by American soldiers,โ€ Trump said. โ€œThat canโ€™t happen. Itโ€™s not going to happen, not as long as Iโ€™m president. It comes from China.โ€

Beijing has complained, but Trump administration officials continue to link the virus to China.
