This year’s Primetime Emmys weren’t just about the winners and red carpet frocks, with the stand-out moment of the night coming in the form of a proposal.
During the ceremony, Glenn Weiss was awarded with the Emmy for Outstanding Directing For A Variety Special, which he took home for his work behind the scenes on this year’s Oscars.
His acceptance speech took an emotional turn when he discussed the loss of his mother, noting: “Part of my heart is broken, I don’t think it will ever be repaired, but she’s in me and she always will be.”
Carrying on the emotional tone of his speech, Glenn continued: “Mom always believed in finding the sunshine in things, and she adored my girlfriend Jan. Jan, you are the sunshine in my life, and mom was right, don’t ever let go of your sunshine.
“You wonder why I don’t like to call you my girlfriend? Because I want to call you my wife.”
As the auditorium erupted into applause, Glenn’s partner Jan Svendsen then joined him on stage, much to the encouragement of the celebs in the audience.
He then dropped down to one knee, presenting his new fiancé with his parents’ wedding ring, to which she was rendered almost speechless (but fortunately for everyone involved, not speechless enough that she couldn’t say yes).
Meanwhile, the room was clearly loving the whole thing, namely Oscars host Jimmy Kimmel…
...‘The Crown’ star Claire Foy...
...and, our personal favourite, ‘Saturday Night Live’ comedian Leslie Jones...
Besides the happy couple, the big winner at this year’s Emmys was Amazon comedy ‘The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel’ with five wins, while ‘American Crime Story’ bagged three, including one for its lead star Darren Criss and creator Ryan Murphy.
‘Game Of Thrones’ took home two awards, including Outstanding Drama Series, while it was a surprisingly uneventful night for ‘The Handmaid’s Tale’, missing out on all eight of the Emmys it was up for.
