Gary Numan has spoken of his “devastation” after his tour bus was involved in an accident that took the life of a 91-year-old man.

On Monday, the ‘Cars’ singer was in Ohio when his bus took a right turn and struck down and killed the nonagenarian on a crossing.

Following the accident, he said in a statement: “We are all utterly devastated by the fatal accident involving our tour bus in Cleveland earlier today.”

Announcing that he was cancelling his show that was scheduled at the House Of Blues that night, he continued: “Everyone of us is filled with a sadness that made it impossible to even consider playing our show tonight. Out of respect, it would have been entirely wrong.

“At the moment, all we can think about are the people affected by this terrible tragedy and to them we send all our love.”

The coach company Coast To Coast has also released a statement, saying (via BBC News): “We really regret the loss of life. We’ve notified our carrier, and they are investigating this incident. In our 34 years of business, this has never happened.”

The man killed in the accident has not been identified by the police, who told reporters the driver at the wheel of the bus had not been impaired, though they would continue an investigation. No arrests have been made.

Gary is best known for his 1979 chart-topping single ‘Cars’, having previously served as the lead singer of Tubeway Army, who reached No.1 that same year with ‘Are ‘Friends’ Electric?’.

His 18th solo album, ‘Savage (Songs From A Broken World)’ was released last year, reaching number two in the UK.
