Gavin And Stacey creators James Corden and Ruth Jones have added fuel to speculation the show could return in some capacity, after the reunion episode smashed ratings records.
It’s now been revealed that last year’s Gavin & Stacey Christmas special – which debuted a decade after the BBC sitcom was last on our screens – was watched by a whopping 18.5 million viewers in four weeks, making it the most-watched TV show since records began in 2002.
Responding to the news, James and Ruth told Metro (in unison, we can only assume, that hasn’t been made clear): “It’s mind-blowing that so many people watched our show – we still can’t get our heads around it, what a massive compliment.
“We are indebted to the BBC for their incredible support but most importantly to those 18.5 million viewers for watching.”
They then cryptically added: “We just hope one day we can let them know what Smithy said next.”
Of course, they’re referring to the Christmas special’s cliffhanger ending, which saw Ruth’s character get down on one knee and propose to Smithy.
Addressing what comes next for the pair, Ruth previously said: “Genuinely I don’t know the answer to that.
“You could go either way with it. It could be the most ridiculous thing, or it could be a marriage made in heaven.”
She continued: “But don’t you think it would end the interest? If they did become a proper couple, would that spoil it? These are all questions that we ponder.”
The Gavin & Stacey was lauded by both fans and critics, although 900 viewers complained to the BBC over the inclusion of an uncensored rendition of Fairytale Of New York in one scene.
