Music fans have been sharing their disappointment at the news that this year’s Glastonbury festival will no longer be going ahead because of the coronavirus pandemic.

Festival organisers confirmed the cancellation on Wednesday morning, less than a week after the first announcement about this year’s line-up.

Shortly after the news broke, many were quick to voice their sadness. However, music fans did point out that it was the right decision to cancel the event, because of the Covid-19 outbreak...

This is so devastatingly disappointing for so many people on different levels - sending love to you if this is the news you were dreading. Next year @glastonbury is going to be off the scale. But for now much love to @emilyeavis & the Glasto family 😢💔 https://t.co/5kfSWbs5Ua

💔
Although this is gutting, it’s the right decision in these very difficult times. It cannot have been an easy decision to make.

Our thoughts are with Michael, @emilyeavis, charities, traders & all the wonderful team who put on the best party in the world. We love you.#twisto https://t.co/PnamvhpX9s

The cancellation of @glastonbury is devastatingly sad, but ultimately for everyone's safety. Lots of love to @emilyeavis and all the amazing teams who make it come together. I know they'll be heartbroken. https://t.co/lzbSeZBztC

This is huge, and should make people who aren’t taking this seriously think even more. The impacts will echo across the whole year and beyond because big things take a lot to build. https://t.co/sfjwxwJ5Vz

Now @glastonbury is cancelled too! 😭😭😭 I mean, I'm kinda relieved, but it was gonna be my first time going so also devastated at the same time. #coronavirus #StaySafe

Totally devastating but understandable. ✊ to Michael, Emily and co. https://t.co/LdWmFb9var

Hard decision but the right call. Heartbroken to say the least, highlight of the year but we will be back and ready to party harder than ever in 2021! Huge love to you guys, Emily, Michael and the rest of the team that make the magic happen, we're all behind you! X

This has felt absolutely inevitable for a week or so now, but still v sad news. Glastonbury will survive it but could be an impossible year for smaller festival companies... https://t.co/iMfE4EHZCy

I keep a list of things to look forward to that I look at when down/stressed. Recently I’ve had to cross out a lot of things, big and small. This one hits hard but is obviously right thing to do. Replacing list items with phone calls, books to read and ‘everyone being ok’ 😢❤️ https://t.co/RWVS6DUtaO

— Gráinne Morrison (@grengrain) March 18, 2020

I'm gutted that Glastonbury has been cancelled. It was one thing to look forward to, but is probably for the best.

When all your plans for a whole year get cancelled within 24 hours of each other 👌👌 https://t.co/qSkmD1mYah

— Cameron Rimmer (@camynwa97) March 18, 2020

Fully expected but. I won’t lie, I am sad. It’s not important in the great scheme of course. Sorry to everyone, sorry about it all. https://t.co/f88CczsyoN

The cancelled event was supposed to have been a big celebration for Glastonbury, as it marked the 50th year of the festival, which did not go unnoticed by fans on Twitter...

Oh, @glastonbury! Such a shame for the 50th anniversary but seems sensible. See you next year!

— Louise (@louweeziz) March 18, 2020

So sad to hear about Glastonbury especially as it’s their 50th anniversary. Life sucks.

— mais (@maisssslnw) March 18, 2020

Sad news for @glastonbury goers and on the 50th anniversary too. Fallow year will re-power the fest. https://t.co/wEmKRvqxAj

— Bruce Bratley (@BratleyBruce) March 18, 2020

This is very upsetting news but I can’t imagine how much of a nightmare it has been for the amazing @glastonbury team who were clearly working so hard to deliver the best 50th year. Thank you so much @emilyeavis & everyone. See you on the farm once everything is back to normal 😔 https://t.co/cdgnqXWsNz

i feel so sorry for @glastonbury. they had an absolute killer lineup and they were having their 50th anniversary too 💔

However, many also pointed out the slight silver lining that at least those who had already paid their Glastonbury deposit would be given the opportunity to roll it over until 2021, guaranteeing them the opportunity to buy a ticket for next year’s event...

obvs the right call to postpone glastonbury and good on them for deciding to roll the tickets over for next year (even if that means many still won’t be able to go). the bbc should deffo do a glasto at home festival and have coverage that weekend of the best of the fest.

— 🐽alim kheraj (@alimkheraj) March 18, 2020

Heartbroken for @glastonbury and @emilyeavis - but Glasto 2021 is going to be the party of the century 🕺🕺🕺

— Lewis Wray (@lewisjwray) March 18, 2020

Gutted, but it’s the right thing to do. At least I don’t have to go through the absolute horror, terror and stress that is attempting to get a ticket for 2021. 98 days to go now becomes 462 days to go 😬 #Glastonbury2020 #glastonbury2021 #Glastonbury #GlastonburyFestival https://t.co/jpuSDPsefU

— Aaron Glover (@AaronLGlover) March 18, 2020

Glastonbury being cancelled is obviously sad but thank the lord they are letting us roll our tickets over to the next one. Thank you Eavis' ❤

— C. 🌹 (@BootsOfDanger) March 18, 2020

Just found out... I have a ticket for @glastonbury 2021. pic.twitter.com/T8bDZ5QcWb

Paul McCartney, Taylor Swift and Kendrick Lamar had all been scheduled to headline at this year’s festival, while Glastonbury organisers had booked Diana Ross to perform in the “Legends” slot, following Kylie Minogue’s appearance last year.

A statement posted on the official Glastonbury Twitter account said: “We are so sorry to announce this but Glastonbury 2020 will have to be cancelled and this will be an enforced fallow year for the festival.

“Clearly this was not a course of action we hoped to take for our 50th anniversary event, but following the new government measures announced this week – and in times of such unprecedented uncertainty – this is now our only viable option.”

The global pandemic has already had a devastating effect on the entertainment industry, with many other festivals – including Radio 1′s Big Weekend, Coachella and Country2Country – having to either postpone or completely cancel their events.
