Google News has launched a fact check tag to help people find stories which separate fact from fiction as the US presidential election enters its final weeks.
The new feature will sit alongside existing labels like in-depth, opinion and local to distinguish between stories on a particular topic.
Google’s head of news, Richard Gingras, said the feature would highlight the work of more than 100 sites which practise verification.
“We’re excited to see the growth of the Fact Check community and to shine a light on its efforts to divine fact from fiction, wisdom from spin,” Gringras said.
The new tag will appear in the expanded story box on news.google.com and on the Google News app, starting in the UK and the US.
Google’s algorithm will search for sites which meet commonly accepted criteria for fact checking, the search giant said.
The move comes after Facebook was criticised for replacing its team of editors with an algorithm which regularly promotes fake news stories.
