Great British Bake Off Viewers Were Not Happy About One Aspect Of Bread Week

Should the amateur bakers really have had to make vegan burgers as well as buns?

Warning: This article contains spoilers for the most recent episode of the Great British Bake Off.

Anyone who watches the Great British Bake Off knows that a lot is expected from the contestants who enter that famous tent, but in this week’s episode, many viewers felt that the judges had asked for too much.

The latest instalment saw the return of bread week, a Bake Off staple that has consistently seen some of the show’s most impressive moments ever (who could forget Paul’s “bread lion” in series 6?).

For this week’s technical challenge, the bakers were tasked with creating eight identical burger buns, but what viewers weren’t expecting was that they’d also have to create vegan burgers to go inside them, which would also be judged.

The challenge saw Amelia fall to the bottom of the pack, after sending Prue Leith into a coughing fit with her chilli-infused burgers.

Eventually, Amelia became the third baker sent home from the contest, but many viewers felt that the burgers shouldn’t have been part of the judging process, in what has always been a baking contest…

Why are the burgers even being judged. As @PaulHollywood said himself. It's the Great British BAKE off. #GreatBritishBakeOff

Veggie burgers on bake-off? 🙄 that’s not baking

— Tom Dabinett (@tomdabs) September 10, 2019

why are they making burgers on bake off, it’s the great british bake off not the great british bbq off #GBBO2019

The burgers may not be perfect but it is the Great British Bake Off, so maybe give them a break and focus on the baps, huns? #GBBO

I mean, to be fair, this is Bake Off and not MasterChef so does it really matter if the burger is a bit naff? #GBBO

Honestly I don’t know why the @BritishBakeOff contestants were asked to make veggie burgers 🍔 completely irrelevant. It’s all about the baps 😂 #bakeoff #thegreatbritishbakeoff

Burgers on Bake Off? What?! Can we rewind and focus on things like... yknow, actual fucking baking. The buns... fine. Burgers...no. #GBBO

I was kicking right off at this. It’s a bake off show and all that should have mattered was the buns and not the shitty veggie burgers inside.

When I’m in charge people will not be making veggie burgers on the Bake Off because that’s NOT BAKING 😡

Since when are burgers a bake off thing! That’s @masterchef #GBBO I think Pru, Paul and the crew forgot to book the catering team!

Although bread week saw the end of Amelia’s Bake Off journey, Michael made a much more successful attempt, and was named Star Baker for the first time.

With cakes, biscuits and bread already ticked off the list, next week will see the 10 remaining contestants tackling dairy week, in what will be a first for the competition.

Now in its 10th series, Bake Off frequently introduces new themes to keep things fresh, with last year’s contestants taking part in the first vegan baking challenges.

The Great British Bake Off continues on Tuesday night at 8pm on Channel 4.
