WARNING: SPOILERS AHEAD

In a year that has tested every single one of us, it was a miracle that we even got a new series of The Great British Bake Off, so it’s no wonder the final was such an emotional rollercoaster.

The final three bakers, Peter Sawkins, Laura Adlington and Dave Friday, sweated it out (literally – it was over 35 degrees in that tent) on Tuesday night’s episode in a bid to be crowned the winner of the eleventh series.

It’s fair to say, it was one hell of a ride...

Before the bakers had even turned their ovens on, Noel was banished from the tent for his pun-filled intro

If bad baking puns were punished, Twitter would have locked us out of our account years ago! #GBBO pic.twitter.com/iBwvUwYyEt

Speaking of puns...

The finalists’ final signature bake was a custard slice. Peter looked confident about his boozy take on the classic...

Oh we’re sure she can rescue them

What is it with this show and lone raspberries doing a runner? #GBBO pic.twitter.com/tuoTEu7Uqc

Ok maybe not, and it all proved too much...

Keep going, Laura. You’ve done so well to get this far. It’s all about the next bake. #GBBO pic.twitter.com/obhzvPe7bs

Well, we’ve all been there...

Thankfully Noel was on hand to get her back on track with this, frankly, incredible pep talk...

Just go forward. ❤️ #GBBO @noelfielding11 pic.twitter.com/jcxq8gdkqK

A Noel Fielding pep talk is the antidote to this year we didn’t know we needed #gbbo

Then came the technical challenge: walnut whirls, which have been in existence for approximately 100 years longer than Peter

This is what the judges were looking for...

And this is what they got...

Absolutely. #GBBO pic.twitter.com/6EJE5aRxuv

Let’s check in on Laura

Oh yeah, she’s fiiiiiiiine. What about Matt?

When the emotions of watching a Bake Off Final get too much… #GBBO pic.twitter.com/Y0extdvBit

Oh gawd. Even the clouds started crying...

Here comes the grain again. Falling on our tent like a choux emotion. #GBBO pic.twitter.com/OB70MELLTe

Peter’s final showstopper was bonkers...

Dave’s was risky...

But Matt was here for his daredevil approach

Definitely the weirdest exchange in the Bake Off Tent ever. 😂😂 #GBBO pic.twitter.com/Hak4cScJJR

As the last few minutes counted down, there was no messing about

The Bake Off Final is going down to the wire! Too tense to make jokes. Must be serious. #GBBO pic.twitter.com/jiiIDzfEyd

Even Peter’s ever-present smile disappeared momentarily

How’s Dave getting on?

Dave sitting on a stool, eating raspberries and offering to help others as they rush to finish their showstoppers is the chilled out vibe we all need right now. #GBBO pic.twitter.com/4ujlbDVkeY

And Noel was soon back to his old silly self too
