Kim-Joy, Rahul Mandal and Ruby Bhogal will now compete to be crowned Britain’s best amateur baker in next week’s grand final.

Briony was sent home after “probably” mixing up salt and sugar in her showstopper challenge, which saw her efforts branded “raw” and “very salty” by judges Paul Hollywood and Prue Leith.

Her earlier technical challenge, a Seven Veils Cake, also saw Paul describe her glazing as “like incontinence pants”.

Prue commented she had “gone backwards” during Patisserie Week, after being a frontrunner in previous weeks.

After being eliminated, Briony said: “I had a little cry after the showstopper but it was more of a release of emotion. I really did leave with a big smile on my face.

“I don’t often say that I am proud of myself – but I am proud of myself.

“You really do make friends for life with the bakers as the experience is so unique, it’s an unbreakable bond that isn’t going to go away.

“I will treasure every moment of my time in the tent and, aside from having my daughter Nora, it’s been one of the best experiences of my life,” she added.

Meanwhile, Ruby is entering next week’s final in a particularly strong position, having been crowned Star Baker for the second time.

She impressed in all three challenges, while Kim-Joy was praised by the judges for her consistency.

‘The Great British Bake Off’ final airs next Tuesday at 8pm on Channel 4.
