With the finish line of Great British Bake Off in sight, one contestant has admitted to feeling “embarrassed” for getting as far as she has in the competition.
Laura Adlington is one of the four bakers to have reached this week’s semi final, despite experiencing a number of disasters in the tent.
Speaking to the Radio Times, she admitted feeling like she hadn’t “deserved” to do as well as she has on the Channel 4 show.
“I was never worried about getting to a certain point, I just wanted to do my best,” Laura said.
“If anything, I felt embarrassed at getting so far, as I didn’t feel like I deserved it.”
Laura suffered one of the biggest disasters of the series, when her ice cream cake was reduced to a puddle during the Showstopper Challenge.
But while a number of her bakes have failed to impress visually, she has often won praise for her flavours from judges Paul Hollywood and Prue Leith, and was also crowned Star Baker during Pastry Week.
Laura has also credited the show with helping her have more self-confidence.
She said: “Before going on Bake Off, I was terrified of being trolled because of my weight, but the vast majority of comments have been positive and the support I’ve had has been overwhelming.
“It’s definitely made me more confident in my own skin and realise there are good people in the world.”
The Great British Bake Off continues on Tuesday at 8pm on Channel 4. The latest issue of Radio Times is on sale now.
