First created in 1969, the 50p piece is celebrating its 50th birthday this year, and to mark the occasion, the Royal Mint is releasing a limited edition commemorative coin.

Featuring an updated version of the inaugural design, the limited edition will be available to purchase online in a range of precious metal and brilliant uncirculated finishes, with prices starting from £10.

The new design is a first for the coin minting process, according to the Royal Mint as it features a special privy mark on the outer rim of the coin, a special reference to the science behind its shape.

While it won’t be entering general circulation, it will be on display at the the Royal Mint Experience in Llantrisant, South Wales where visitors can see the design process of the coin and create their own version.

Nicola Howell, director of consumer of the Royal Mint said in a statement: “Over the last 50 years the 50p has grown to become one of the most collectable coins. Its iconic and revolutionary shape is distinctive, and has led to it becoming one of the most loved coins amongst the public. It is an honour to mark such a significant anniversary with this commemorative 50p, featuring Christopher Ironside’s design.”

Its famous seven sided shape is thanks to Hugh Conway and his team of engineers at the Decimal Currency Board in the late sixties.

The biggest coin in Britain’s history, it was pressed into a heptagon to make it easily distinguishable by both feel and sight, while allowing it to roll in vending machines and parking meters.
