How Your Clutter Is Weighing You Down & Making You Unhappy

Our minds become cluttered, thoughts, ideas and memories whizzing around with no place to rest. If our environment mirrors this inner chaos, our senses pick up on it and the inner chaos is likely magnified.

There is no 'key' to happiness, just like everything else in life, achieving happiness requires a multitude of ingredients and these will be entirely different for each and every one of us.

However, research shows that our surroundings, the environment that we live, work and socialise in has a profound effect on our happiness. A messy home or work space can often leave us feeling anxious, helpless or overwhelmed.

Mental clutter keeps us from being productive and happy. Over time, holding on to too many physical possessions begins to weigh us down and becomes emotional baggage. Decluttering isn't just about getting your desk in order or clearing out your wardrobe, it's about letting go of all that stuff you've been hanging on to from past careers, relationships and unfinished business.

We hold on to things based on hope with the rational that we might need them some day...hoping that we might get around to reading that pile of books building up in the corner or lose enough weight to fit into those size 8 jeans in the bottom of our drawers. However, after a while, all of those things build up and the clutter becomes overwhelming.

June Suwaturi, writer of 'Behind the Clutter' takes a unique approach to decluttering that looks deep inside your psyche and challenges you to face the real reason why your space is cluttered. June states that we should look closely at each item in our space and ask ourselves

'Do you honestly need this item? Do you love it? Does it have some sort of significance in your life? Does it serve a purpose?'.

If the answer to all of these questions is "no," it's time to get rid of that thing and move on to the next one.

Fortunately, unlike other, more commonly recognised sources of stress (e.g. our jobs or relationships), clutter is one of the easier life stressors to fix.

And this is where I come in...as a Professional Organiser, I understand that to get to grips with their clutter, my clients need to understand why they hold on to certain belongings and how best to deal with these belongings in order to move on with their lives.

Working with clients to declutter their space is so much more than tidying up shelves and emptying cupboards, it involves getting into their heads and their hearts and my aim is to ensure that each client comes out of the decluttering process feeling happier, more relaxed and in control of their lives.
