Hugh Jackman is set to take a bit of The Greatest Showman sparkle to this year’s Brit Awards, announcing he’ll be opening this year’s ceremony with a performance from the hit musical film.
While we were initially surprised to see that the Brits had not reflected The Greatest Showman’s huge chart success in their nominations earlier this year, it’s now been confirmed that the film will be the basis of the show’s opening number next week, with Hugh at the centre of the action.
Brits chairman Jason Iley said of the news: “It’s only fitting that the UK’s biggest celebration of musical successes should be kicked off with a performance from the biggest selling album in the UK of the last year.”
Hugh also shared his excitement in a video he posted on Instagram, in which he joked that he was struggling to keep the announcement a secret.
Last year, the Brits kicked off with a performance from comedy rapper Big Shaq, which featured an appearance from the night’s host, Jack Whitehall.
With Jack returning to present the Brit Awards once again, we wouldn’t be surprised if he ended getting into the Greatest Showman spirit and joining in the opening number.
Hugh Jackman is the latest big celebrity confirmed for the upcoming Brit Awards, with appearances from Little Mix and rapper Ms Banks, The 1975 and Jess Glynne already confirmed.
There’ll also be a mega-performance from Calvin Harris and his former collaborators Dua Lipa, Sam Smith and Rag’n’Bone Man.
The Brit Awards will take place on Wednesday February 20 at London’s O2 Arena, and will air live from ITV from 8pm.
