This is our first blog post for the Huffington Post so please excuse us as we introduce ourselves. We are Candace and Chris and we have busted plumbing, and we are not talking about our house. No, we are talking reproduction. You see, we had the brilliant idea before we got married that we would get married, buy a house, and start a family. So, get married ... check, buy a house ... check, start a family ...
We first starting trying to have a child over 6 and a half years ago. Not there yet and we have tried about everything you can think of. We tried the traditional way, no go. We then attempted fertility treatments. Turns out, our don't touch the stove if it burns your hand instincts suck. After many surgeries, we attempted in-vitro fertilisation... a lot. We are the 1 in 8. Next time you are in the movie theatre with a bunch of kissing couples, look around because 1 out of 8 are having trouble starting a family.
So, that leaves us with no baby, no money, and no chance to keep going, almost. More on that in a second. One last thing, Candace was recently diagnosed with pre-cancerous cells in her uterus and will likely have a hysterectomy before the year is done. Heavy stuff right. Here is our silver lining, we have a childhood friend that offered to be a surrogate for us. We also happen to have two fertilised embryos on ice, which we refer to as our "frosties". That is the path we are racing down now. Fingers crossed, breath held, no walking under ladders or opening umbrellas indoors, basically we are doing everything we can to get that thing called "luck" on our side. Know any witch doctors?
On top of all of this, during our last final bite at the IVF apple we let the world into our bedroom. OK, get your mind out of the gutter. We allowed MTV to film us for a year to document our infertility journey on the Emmy award winning series "True Life". Our show was "I'm Desperate to have a Baby". Not the most flattering of titles but also not entirely inaccurate either. We ARE desperate to have a baby. Maybe we should switch that out with determined to have a baby. Anyway, enough about us. We will be posting about all things family building from cervical mucus to adoption to insurance coverage. We hope to spread awareness about infertility and provide those going through infertility issues another resource for information and support.
