‘Coronation Street’ stars have joined in paying tribute to Jean Alexander - the actress who made a hairnet, pinny and curlers her own as Hilda Ogden - following her death yesterday at the age of 90.
Sally Dynevor, who still plays Sally Webster on the show, shared many of Jean’s later scenes with her. Today she posted a picture from those days, adding three words “All woman #Legend”.
Kevin Kennedy also shared scenes with her as unlucky-in-love Curly Watts and he added his sentiments.
Antony Cotton added that Hilda’s grand exit in 1987 - watched by more than 23 million viewers - remained his favourite episode ever.
Catherine Tyldesley - who plays barmaid Eva - was one of the present crop of young stars on the show to recognise Hilda’s everlasting impact. She posted:
Jean Alexander played Hilda Ogden for 23 years in total, during which time her exasperation with husband Stan, rivalry with Elsie Tanner and rare flirtation with lipstick made her one of British TV’s most distinctive characters and familiar faces.
Although she never married, Jean enjoyed close family life, with one of the last pictures of her showing her laughing happily alongside her brother.
She passed away on Friday, following a brief hospital stay.
