Growing up Jewish can get a little strange, food-wise. From explaining to your first grade contemporaries what matzoh is to the potential stares of your gentile significant other when you wolf down gefilte fish on Passover, there always seems to be a lot of explaining to do. Because "try it, you'll like it" seems to be genetically coded into our parents and grandparents, it's inevitably made it to our generation too. I can't even count the number of times I've started to describe chopped liver or whitefish salad and had to pause to say, "I know it sounds crazy, but it actually tastes really good."
Jewish kids of the world, I'm giving us a break from all that. Today, let's celebrate our weird secret code. Let's talk about the things we might be ashamed to love, or still irrationally hate -- and let's just skip gelt, because everyone loves gelt, gelt is cheating. Here, you'll find 15 food things only a Jewish kid would understand. Let us know if we missed any of your favorites/constant thorns in your side. L'chaim!
