US stars including Oprah Winfrey, Lin-Manuel Miranda and Ariana Grande have been celebrating on social media following Joe Biden’s inauguration.

Since the ceremony on Wednesday, a number of public figures have been voicing their joy at seeing Biden and Kamala Harris sworn in as the new president and vice president, respectively.

Tweeting a photo of Harris taking her oath, talk show legend Oprah wrote that she is “in tears watching this extraordinary moment for women in the US and the world”.

“I call this a beginning, a do over, a genesis,” Viola said, alongside a photo of Biden and Harris with their spouses. “I am ready to do better because I know better.”

The Inauguration has begun. Thank you everyone in America who stood in opposition to the former administration, & who so generously worked so hard to give the United States back its dignity and reason through the election of #JoeBiden and #KamalaHarris. They have a lot to fix.

Sooooo much work to do. But TODAY I want to celebrate. And pray. And revel in our tremendous power (even against all odds) to make history happen.

In my lifetime, I’m not sure where the best Inauguration speech falls, by I am positive I just heard the most important inaugural speech of my lifetime just now.

Since you still have until 12 noon today before you're legally required to get out of the WH, you really should fire off one last vindictive, grievance-filled rage-tweet as Prez, just for old times sake. 👍That'll show the radical left! 🤔oh, wait... pic.twitter.com/RP2sl3iysw

There was also a lot of love on social media for Amanda Gorman, who recited a rousing poem during the ceremony, becoming the youngest person in history to do so at just 23 years old.

As well as Amanda’s poem, the ceremony featured performances from Lady Gaga, Jennifer Lopez and country musician Garth Brooks.

Gaga delivered a stunning rendition of the US national anthem, while J-Lo performed a medley of This Land Is Your Land and America The Beautiful, with a quick nod to one of her own hits for good measure.

Towards the end of the proceedings, Garth sang Amazing Grace, urging those in attendance – as well as viewers watching at home – to join him.
