John Legend was unimpressed when his three-year-old daughter, Luna, referred to him by his first name – rather than calling him daddy.
The 41-year-old, who is dad to Luna, three, and Miles, one, with his wife Chrissy Teigen, was captured in an Instagram video with his daughter.
Luna walks up to the singer holding their new (super cute) family dog, Petey, and says to her dad: “John, would you like to hold her?” to which Legend responds: “I’m not John, I’m your dad!”
Meanwhile in the background, Teigen can be heard laughing at her daughter’s choice of name.
In the comments, parents relate to the toddler calling her dad by his first name. “My Aubrey did this when she was a little’un,” one wrote. “She soon realised she preferred ‘Mummy’.”
Another commented: “So glad it’s not just mine! My son (four) won’t stop calling me by my first name so I’ve given up correcting him.”
This is completely normal, according to says Darshak Sanghavi, assistant professor at the University of Massachusetts Medical School and author of A Map of the Child: A Pediatrician’s Tour of the Body.
“Children hear their parents and other adults calling each other by their first names and they want to mimic them,” he told BabyCenter.
Sanghavi says having a big reaction to this when it happens could cause kids to carry on using that name, so it’s best to downplay it. You could also explain that ‘mummy’ and ‘daddy’ are special names they can use, he adds.
Either way, eventually the novelty is likely to wear off.
