Of Course The John Lewis Christmas Advert Has Already Had Everyone In Tears

"Just what we need in 2020."

This year’s John Lewis Christmas advert has been unveiled, and we probably don’t need to tell you that it’s sparked quite an emotional reaction.

As what’s been a difficult year for most of us nears its end, the department store has broken from tradition with its new advertising campaign.

Rather than focussing on one story, the new ad features a string of short animated vignettes, which show people (and some cute animals, obv) performing small acts of kindness to brighten one another’s day.

The ad was unveiled online on Friday morning, and it very quickly gave viewers a lot of feelings:

The first proper sign of Christmas. The arrival of the John Lewis ad.

This @waitrose & #johnlewischristmasadvert moved me more than ever before.
Perhaps it’s thinking of how different #Christmas2020 will be. Perhaps it’s @celeste’s magical voice. Or perhaps it’s just that hedgehog... 😭 https://t.co/CNFG6HFYDP

The John Lewis Christmas ad has lots of different beautiful animation styles, a sweet message but most notably it’s using a BRAND NEW SONG rather than a cover! Lovely work by @celeste. https://t.co/pm6tJ25GLJ

While past years have been soundtracked by covers from artists like Ellie Goulding, Lily Allen and Bastille singer Dan Smith, the new advert features an original song from Celeste.

The British singer-songwriter – who was named the BBC’s Sound Of 2020 and received the Rising Star prize at this year’s Brit Awards – said: “I felt honoured to be asked to take part. I wanted to create something that felt classic but still true to who I am as a writer and performer.”

Celeste’s track is also helping those in need, with 10p from each download of A Little Love going towards John Lewis’ charity campaign.

The retailer previously pledged support to FareShare, the Marcus Rashford-backed charity that helps those facing food poverty, and Home-Start which works with parents who are struggling.

Instead of the usual stuffed toy merchandise, the retailer has unveiled a series of “Give A Little Love’”products, including a slogan t-shirt and a heart-shaped umbrella. All profits from these will also go towards the charity appeal.

A second shorter ad, created with artwork by four post-graduate students from Kingston University, details how customers can further support the campaign.
