It’s been 10 years since an army of celebrities including Cheryl, Fearne Cotton and Chris Moyles climbed Kilimanjaro for Comic Relief and to mark the occasion, a new batch of A-listers are currently ascending the mountain.
Now four days in, they’ve almost reached the halfway point and it’s fair to say the gang are definitely discovering how tough the climb is set to be.
Basically, they’re all suffering from a lot of altitude sickness.
Anita Rani is one of the celebs who has had it pretty bad, admitting “it was unlike anything I’ve experienced before”.
“I honestly thought I wasn’t going to be able to carry on with the expedition,” she added. “And that had me balling my eyes out like a small child, so there is a lot of emotion.”
The sickness has come as the celebs have hit a tough part of the climb, entering remote areas where their only company is the odd buffalo.
Little Mix’s Jade Thirlwall has also struggled, saying on Wednesday: “The last 12 hours have probably been the hardest. Last night I was really, really sick, vomiting, I felt nauseous, had a bad tummy and a high temperature, I’m not sure if it was a bug or the altitude. Been taking tablets, didn’t sleep very well.”
And to make matters worse, she’s got a blister on her toe as well. Sometimes you just cannot catch a break.
Meanwhile, Pointless host Alexander Armstrong is suffering from another ailment, declaring: “There’s no nice way of putting it really, trapped wind. I’ve got trapped wind.”
We’re not sure what to make of that, to be honest.
It hasn’t all been illness and ermm, trapped wind though, as on Tuesday evening, the celebs-turned-mountain climbers enjoyed some cake in honour of Ed Balls’ birthday.
“They made me a cake and everybody sang Happy Birthday, so it’s ok, but I’m missing the kids,” he admitted. “I got the birthday cards, they said please don’t be too embarrassing…I’ve already failed.”
The whole climb is being filmed by the BBC for a special documentary, Kilimanjaro: The Bigger Red Nose Climb, which will air on Red Nose Day. Friday 15 March.
Other stars taking on the challenge include Strictly Come Dancing judge Shirley Ballas, BBC Breakfast’s Dan Walker, Dani Dyer and Jade’s bandmate Leigh-Anne Pinnock.
