Police searching for missing Hull University student Libby Squire have confirmed they recovered the body of a woman.
The remains were found in the Humber Estuary in water close to Spurn Point on Wednesday afternoon.
A spokesman for Humberside Police said: “Following the recovery of a body from the Humber Estuary yesterday afternoon, we can confirm the deceased is a woman.
“The post-mortem examination is under way and is expected to continue into the evening.
“We have been in contact and informed those that needed to be made aware of the recovery.
“Formal identification is still yet to take place and we remain unable at this stage to confirm her identity.”
Squire went missing nearly seven weeks ago after a night out.
The last known sighting of the 21-year-old, who was originally from High Wycombe, Buckinghamshire, was just after midnight on Friday 1 February at the junction of Beverley Road and Haworth Street in Hull.
Pawel Relowicz, 24, from Raglan Street, Hull, was arrested on suspicion of abduction in connection with Squire’s disappearance and remains under investigation.
He has been charged with a number of unrelated offences and has been remanded in custody.
