Lily Allen has commemorated nine months of sobriety with a post on Instagram.
The singer has spoken openly in the past about her past alcohol and substance abuse, most notably in her autobiography My Words Exactly and her most recent album, No Shame.
On Tuesday afternoon, the singer announced to fans that she was officially nine months sober.
“9 months sober today!” she wrote, alongside a photo of herself in gym clothes. “And the beginning of an ab is appearing. Very pleased.”
Referring to her rather messy background, she jokingly added: “Still can’t make my bed though.”
In a 2018 interview, Lily spoke to GQ about what she referred to as her “codependent” relationship with alcohol, revealing that at a particular time in her personal life years earlier, things had become “really bad”, to the extent she was drinking a bottle of vodka a night.
“I lost my house and my kids started to feel distant and I broke up with my husband and started to realise [drinking like that] probably wasn’t working,” she told the magazine.
At the time, Lily claimed: “I’ve always been a big self-medicator… now knowing that, if I’m not feeling 100 percent, I just stay away from drugs and alcohol, basically.”
She also sang about this period on the 2018 song Everything To Feel Something, which featured the lyrics: “I’m at my worst when I’m alone, can’t take the peace, so my glass is always half empty, someone fill it up for me, set me free.”
Lily is currently self-isolating at home with her two daughters, Ethel and Marnie, as well as her boyfriend David Harbour, best known for his role in the Netflix series Stranger Things.
