A man has been arrested after Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn was hit by an egg.
The Labour leader was in north London visiting Finsbury Park’s Muslim Welfare House when the alleged attack happened at 3.52pm.
A 41-year-old man, thought to be a pro-Brexit campaigner, was “detained quickly” by police officers and arrested on suspicion of assault.
Corbyn is not thought to have been seriously hurt in the incident.
The Met Police said: “On Sunday, 3 March at around 15:52 hours an egg was thrown at a member of parliament.
“The incident occurred on Seven Sister’s Road.
“A 41-year-old man was quickly detained by officers on scene and arrested on suspicion of assault.
“He is currently in custody at a north London police station.”
The Labour leader was taking part in the fifth annual Visit My Mosque day, in which Muslim places of worship across the UK open their doors to the public.
Corbyn is not the first political leader to have been pelted with an egg during a public engagement in recent years.
Former Prime Minister David Cameron was hit by targeted by a student after a question and answer session at Cornwall College, near Plymouth, when on the 2010 general election campaign trail.
The then-Tory leader, who had been followed by a giant chicken during the campaign due to his dodging of TV debates, joked afterwards: “Now I know which came first - the chicken not the egg.”
The student responsible, Tyler Dixon, was reportedly expelled from school for the attack, despite making an apology.
Ed Miliband was pelted with several eggs by a former homeless man protesting that Labour and the Tories were both “on the side of the rich”.
Miliband was at a south London market speaking about the rising cost of living when he was targeted in 2013.
He also took the ‘egging’ in good humour, commenting afterwards: “I am always looking for new ways to connect with voters.”
