A man is suspected of stealing a designer cat in north London before escaping on the overground with the feline tucked under his arm.

Police released a picture of the man seen at Canonbury Station cradling Mr Muk, a Siberian Forest cat, on Tuesday, after he allegedly approached him on Petherton Road, “before picking him up and making off”.

The owner of the pedigree pet said Siberian Forest cats are regularly sold for more than £500, and reported him stolen from outside a residential address on 30 July.

The Met Police said the suspect, described as a man in his 20s with short black hair, and Mr Muk were last seen at Canonbury Station between 8.30pm and 9pm.

“The suspect has then boarded a London Overground train with the animal,” the force said in a statement, adding that Mr Muk’s owner has been “very upset following this theft”.

PC Jade Woodley said: “Theft is theft and taking someone’s pet because you like the look of them or consider them high value is a criminal offence. Call us if you recognise the man in the image who is wanted for questioning.”

Anyone who recognises the man or has information is urged to call police on 101 quoting reference 2718314/18.

Crimestoppers can also be called anonoymously via 0800 555 111.
