US actor Marion Ramsey, best known for her roles in the Police Academy films and in musical theatre, has died at the age of 73.
A representative for the star confirmed on Thursday that she had died at her home in Los Angeles, following a brief illness.
Her management company Roger Paul Inc. said in a statement: “Her passion for performing and sharing her heart with the world was immense.
“Marion carried with her a kindness and permeating light that instantly filled a room upon her arrival. The dimming of her light is already felt by those who knew her well. We will miss her, and always love her.”
Beginning her career in theatre, Marion appeared in the original Broadway production of Hello, Dolly!, and later starring in a host of other shows including Grind and Eubie!.
In 1984, she played Laverne Hooks in the first Police Academy film, a character renowned for her distinct speaking voice.
She went on to return for a total of five Police Academy sequels throughout the 1980s, also appearing in Bill Cosby’s comedy sketch show, Modern Family and lending her voice to Robot Chicken.
Marion’s agent noted an especially proud moment was when Dreamgirls was made into a film, as she was the inspiration for one of the characters in the original Broadway show.
Her final role was in the film When I Sing, with the film’s writer and star Linda Chorney writing on Facebook: “It is with great sadness that I share our loss of my friend, and one of the shining stars of When I Sing, (her final role) the beautiful, kind, hilarious, Marion Ramsey. I will miss you, my silly sister.
“She was best known for her iconic role in Police Academy films. And she could sing her butt off.”
