Who's Going to Win the Masters?

Armed with my limited wisdom and even more limited golfing skill-set, here's who I think is going to be there or thereabouts come close-of-play on Sunday 12 April...

I love golf me.

Those of you out there that come out with that 'spoils a good walk' clap-trap have clearly never felt the sheer unadulterated joy of thinking about a shot, envisioning it in your mind's eye and then executing it with such aplomb that you feel like time has stood still and the entire world is marvelling at your skills.

I'll admit that this happens very rarely for me, not because I don't play that much, but because to tell you the truth I'm just not that good. But when it does happen, well, there is quite literally nothing like it.

Anyway, I could pontificate about my golf skills (or lack of them) all day long, but this is supposed to be about the big boys and how they are going to fare at The Masters, 2015.

So, armed with my limited wisdom and even more limited golfing skill-set, here's who I think is going to be there or thereabouts come close-of-play on Sunday, 12 April.

Let's imagine I know what I'm talking about for a second.

The last five Masters have played directly into the hands of those players that can power past the trees that Hootie Johnson planted and not give two 'hoots' (see what I did there) about the recent tee extensions by Tom Fazio.

Basically, the big hitters tend to do best around this famous course these days.

And, possibly more than any other major tournament on the calendar, the course at Augusta National seems to reward those wielding the most proficient putter throughout the week.

So, on that basis, here are my top five contenders for the title this year.

1. Bubba Watson

The defending champion is undoubtedly in a great place mentally, continues to smash his driver accurately and unlike nobody else and he can putt pretty well too. He is third in the longest drive percentage stats this season and is tied 12th for putts. If the man from Bagdad, Florida gets a favourable tee-time, he could just bring home a third title.

2. Jimmy Walker

Lies, damned lies and statistics - but you can't argue with the numbers I'm afraid. Walker has had five wins in just over a year, was inside the top 10 the first time he went round here at Augusta and is inside the top 20 for driving and the top 10 for putts this year. An impressive win at San Antonio last time out means he comes to the Masters in form. Could now be his time?

3. Jordan Spieth

It's hard, but you have to keep in mind that this Texan golfer is still only 21. His putting throughout the opening of the season has been spectacular and as he tied for second place in his first Masters tournament last year, Spieth probably only needs a little luck with the tee-time draw and he could be laughing on Sunday night. He'll have to keep that firebrand attitude under control though.

4. Adam Scott

An 'under the radar' contender if ever there was one, the powerful Australian has the length to cope at Augusta - he's tied 2nd for longest drives - but I still don't think he knows which putter to use to make it count (he's 175th in putting stats). Last time round many believed the big Aussie was caught up in the euphoria of being defending champion, and because he doesn't have that burden to shoulder this year and if he can get that putter hot, I think he may spring a surprise.

5. Rory McIlroy

The world-number-one is always going to figure on somebody's betting slip, but he has had some really demoralising scores at the Masters (at least one round over 77 in each of his last five appearances). He has ample strength and distance to compete around Augusta and more than enough touch to pose a serious threat, However, if the wind gets up and the greens are a bit firm, he said himself that he may not have what it takes to tame the course.

So there you are, my five contenders for the 79th edition of The Masters - what do you think?

If you think you know better, contact me on Facebook & Twitter or check out my blog at www.physioroom.com - this week I have done a Masters Beginners Guide for all of you who (like me) have no idea about golf but love the game enough to be interested - Check it out here.

Enjoy the tournament and keep spoiling those good walks.
