The news is not likely to come as a surprise to much of the country, which has been battered by heavy downpours across four consecutive weekends, and is currently in the midst of its third named storm – Jorge – in a month.

There are currently 86 flood warnings in place, with 216 “be prepared” flood alerts also issued by the environment agency.

On Saturday morning South Wales Police issued a “critical alert” following a night of extreme rainfall.

There are four Met Office weather warnings currently in place, all of which are set to remain for the rest of the weekend.
