An ANC MP died and three others were seriously injured in a car accident outside Paarl in Cape Town on Tuesday morning.
Nomalungelo Gina of the African National Congress, Ian Ollis of the Democratic Alliance and Cynthia Majeke of the United Democratic Movement sustained serious injuries. The three were taken to the Paarl Medi-Clinic for treatment. The ruling party confirmed that the MP who died was from their party.
"The ANC deputy chief whip comrade Doris Dlakude is currently on her way to Paarl to identify the comrade who has passed on and visit those in hospital," it said in a statement.
"We wish those in hospital a speedy recovery. This is indeed a very painful time for the ANC parliamentary caucus."
All four MPs from the Portfolio Committee of Basic Education were travelling to Paarl as part of an oversight visit to various schools in the area when their car overturned. They were scheduled to visit Bonwe Primary School.
The DA sent its condolences to the family of the MP who died.
"We join them in mourning their loss and wish them strength during this difficult time."
The ANC said it was unfortunate that it was losing another member in such a short space of time.
Last week, ANC MP Trevor Bonhomme died after a long illness.
This is a developing story. More details to follow.
