All The MPs Standing Down As Deadline For General Election Candidates Closes

Cabinet minister Nicky Morgan, ex-Chancellor Philip Hammond and Labour deputy leader Tom Watson among the biggest names quitting.

More than 70 MPs have announced they are standing down ahead of the December 12 general election as the deadline for candidates closes.

Some of the biggest names in British politics are quitting Westminster, with many pointed to the toxic nature of modern politics and the abuse they recieve as MPs. during a wave of announcements.

Ex-chancellor Philip Hammond, Cabinet minister Nicky Morgan, her former Tory cabinet colleague Amber Rudd and Labour deputy leader Tom Watson are not running in the December 12 vote.

Many of those giving way were former Conservative and Labour MPs who have become independents, either of their own volition or having the party whip removed.

According to our count just after the 4pm deadline, 75 MPs are quitting. The total includes 32 Conservatives, 21 from the Labour Party, 15 Independents, 3 Lib Dems, 2 from Change UK, 1 DUP and John Bercow. The record is thought to be in the 2010 election, following the expenses scandal, when 149 MPs stood down.
