The trailer for Disney’s live-action iteration of Mulan has dropped with all the force of a great typhoon.
On Thursday, the company dropped the full trailer for their upcoming remake of the 1998 animated film, which features Liu Yifei as a courageous daughter who secretly takes her ailing father’s place in the Chinese Imperial Army to spare him from serving.
Fans of the original film will notice a lot of familiar elements in the official trailer: Mulan’s hair comb, recitations of bringing honour to the family and a call to make men out of every warrior.
It does appear, however, that Mulan doesn’t cut her hair short like she does in the cartoon iteration (her flowing locks even appear prominently in the film’s movie poster) nor does a Li Shang-like character crop up.
There’s also a mention of a witch as one of the main villains, apparently instead of the Hun warlord Shan Yu, who we met in the original film.
It had already been confirmed that the remake would not be a musical, unlike the animated version, which featured the likes of Reflection and I’ll Make A Man Out Of You.
Currently, it’s not clear what else has been changed or added, but it will all unfold in full when the film hits cinemas in 2020.
Other live-action Disney films currently in the works include a new version of The Little Mermaid, with Grammy-nominated singer Halle Bailey in the lead role, as well as an origin story for 101 Dalmatians’ Cruella De Ville, in which Emma Stone will play the iconic villain.
