Whenever I've rocked up to teach a Yoga class, I've always been equipped with a delicious smoothie to keep my energy levels going, especially if my class was followed by a two hour workshop.
Someone's always asked about what I put in my smoothies and why they're beneficial. I like using seasonal ingredients and to be honest, when it's freezing cold, the last thing I want to guzzle is a smoothie, regardless of how mouth watering it is! So I'm back on them and praying for the sun to shine more often being the new season.
My aim when I'm chopping and whisking it all up to chuck into my Nutri bullet ( great if you're time poor ) is to make sure the smoothie provides me with the correct nutrition as in carbohydates, protein and fats. A wholesome and nutritious meal in one, although I use it mainly as a snack as I lead a naturally active lifestyle.
So here goes, my own very berry, step into spring smoothie! ( All organic ingredients of course )
- Half cup of strawberries
- Half cup of blueberries
- Small cup of almond milk
- A small handful of pumpkin seeds
- A small handful of goji berries
- 1 table spoon of Udo's oil
- Half bunch of chopped up parsley and mint
Place all the ingredients in the blender or bullet, ( you can add ice ) whizz until smooth and either drink immediately as a yummy snack or take it to replenish your body post workout/yoga class.
Health benefits:
Strawberries - Great for your immune system as they are high in Vitamin C and a good source of fibre.
Blueberries - A good source of Vitamin K, Vitamin C and manganese which is an essential enzyme for building bones.
Almond Milk - There is no cholesterol or saturated fat in almond milk and it's dairy and lactose free.
Pumpkin seeds - Full of both major and trace minerals, protein and fatty acids. These seeds also contain anti parasitic properties and make a good antioxidant. This is the only seed which is alkaline forming.
Goji berries - Good source of vitamins A, vitamin B2, C and Iron. Also protects from heart disease. One cup of goji berries contains 8 grams of protein.
Udo's oil - I use this amazing organic oil as it contains all 3 omegas 3,6 & 9.
Parsley - Great for cancer and diabetes prevention.
Mint - Great for digestion and adds a delicious flavour to your smoothie.
Enjoy :)
