Netflix Accused Of Whitewashing By Nailed It! Host Nicole Byer

The comedian has hosted all three series of the baking programme.

Netflix has been accused of whitewashing by Nicole Byer, the host of one of its original programmes.

The American comedian and presenter fronts baking competition Nailed It! and was unhappy when a fan pointed out her two white, male co-stars were being used in a thumbnail for the show.

The image, shared on Twitter, used Chef Jacques Torres (who assists Nicole by judging on the show) and “Producer Wes” (who makes just a couple of brief appearances in every episode) to promote the programme on Netflix’s site.

Press Association reporters that in a string of now-deleted tweets, Nicole wrote: “If Netflix didn’t sign my checks and give me a huge platform and opportunity to showcase my comedy... I would talk about how f***** up and disrespectful this is to me a black woman. Also how black women are a lot of times erased from many different conversations.

“I would talk about how it makes me know my true value as the host of the show where I work incredibly hard to elevate the material given to me. Lot of moments people love are improvised.”

“I would talk about how this essentially white washing for more views,” she continued. “But they sign my checks and I’m honestly so happy and greatful to and for the show and no sarcasm I love my job and wish to keep it so I’ll be quiet.” [sic]

After receiving numerous supportive tweets from fans, Nicole shared an update on Wednesday morning.

“I deleted my last set of tweets bc I talked to one the execs on my show about it and the thrilling conclusion is the removal of the image and a conversation about how the thumbnails are made and selected that I’m happy with,” she wrote.

HuffPost UK has contacted Netflix for comment.

Nicola has hosted all three series of Nailed It!, as well as the 2018 Christmas special.

The programme sees three wannabe star bakers attempting to recreate elaborate masterpieces designed by Chef Jacques or a guest judge.

She’s also had smaller acting roles in shows including The Good Place, Brooklyn Nine-Nine and The Simpsons.
