South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley (R) called for Dylann Roof, the suspect in the shooting of nine people in a historic black church, to receive the death penalty.
“We will absolutely want him to have the death penalty,” Haley said during a Friday interview on NBC's "Today," calling Roof "a person filled with hate."
The shooting took place during a Bible study session at Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Charleston, South Carolina, Wednesday night. Roof was captured Thursday in Shelby, North Carolina.
Roof's roommate said Thursday the 21-year-old had been "planning something like that for six months."
“He said he wanted to start a civil war," Dalton Tyler told ABC News. "He said he was going to do something like that and then kill himself.”
