If you’re a fan of BBC Three’s Normal People, you’ll most likely know that Connell’s chain has taken on a life of its own since the show’s debut.

In the last few weeks, the chain has trended on Twitter and been the subject of think-pieces about why a piece of jewellery is driving us all wild, while a dedicated Instagram account has also amassed more than 160,000 followers.

Actor Paul Mescal has now announced that fans could soon own Connell’s actual chain, as he is raffling it off for charity.

He is raising money for Irish charity Pieta, which provides support to people who are suicidal or engaging in self-harm.

Paul said: “I am delighted to be able to help out Pieta by raffling off my chain that has taken on a following of its own since Normal People hit television screens.

“Pieta is a cause very close to my heart, having experienced loss due to suicide in my local town while growing up.”

He added that the series “touches upon depression and suicidal ideation, so it seemed like a very special partnership to want to help those in similar situations”.

The raffle opened on Monday and runs until 8 June, with more than 13,000 euros (£11,600) having already been raised by the charity initiative so far.

This news certainly helps make up for the bombshell Paul dropped on Normal People fans last week.

He said that a second series is “not on the cards”, telling Wonderland magazine: “I do feel like the series that has finished is its own thing, and I’m totally comfortable with that. It’s not on the cards at the moment, but if I got the opportunity to play him again, amazing.”

Normal People is available to stream on the BBC iPlayer now
