For Chinese diver He Zi, the past 24 hours have been a whirlwind.
On Sunday, the 25-year-old Olympian won a silver medal after an incredible finish in the women’s three-metre springboard at the Rio Olympics.
After receiving her medal, her boyfriend and fellow diver Qin Kai, 30, walked over to congratulate her and ended up down on one knee.
The emotional moment was captured on film, with a shaken-looking Kai presenting a ring box to Zi underneath an ornamental glass birdcage.
Wiping away tears, Zi said yes.
She told the BBC: “We’ve been dating for six years, but I didn’t expect him to propose today.
“He said a lot of things, made a lot of promises, but I think the thing that touched me the most is I think this is the guy I can trust for the rest of my life.”
Of course, Zi’s incredible achievement here is not to be overshadowed by an engagement.
The diver performed a spectacular finish in the women’s three-metre springboard, coming second to fellow Chinese diver Shi Tingmao. Meanwhile Italy’s Tania Canotto secured bronze.
The proposal is the second to take place during the Rio 2016 Olympics, earlier in the games Brazilian Olympics volunteer Marjorie Enya proposed to girlfriend Isadora Cerullo, a member of Brazil’s rugby sevens women’s team.
