Oprah Winfrey has spoken out about the suggestion that she gave advice to Prince Harry and Meghan Markle ahead of their announcement about their plans to step down as senior royals.

Page Six reported on Thursday that Oprah – a friend of the royal couple, and one of the A-list guests at their wedding in 2018 – had talked through their decision with them and even “encouraged” them to pursue a new life in North America.

However, Oprah has now set the record straight, insisting this is not the case.

Meghan and Harry do not need my help figuring out what’s best for them,” she told People magazine.

“I care about them both and support whatever decisions they make for their family.”

Earlier this week, Harry and Meghan caused a huge splash when they released a statement revealing: “After many months of reflection and internal discussions, we have chosen to make a transition this year in starting to carve out a progressive new role within this institution.

“We intend to step back as ‘senior’ members of the royal family and work to become financially independent, while continuing to fully support Her Majesty The Queen.”

A Buckingham Palace spokesperson later said discussions were “at an early stage”, adding: “We understand their desire to take a different approach, but these are complicated issues that will take time to work through.”

The BBC’s royal correspondent reported soon after the announcement that no other member of the royal family was consulted before the statement, and the palace was understood to be “disappointed” and “hurt”.

Since then, a number of stars have weighed in on the matter, including the always-opinionated breakfast TV host Piers Morgan and Heart Radio presenter Amanda Holden.
