Top Gear presenter Paddy McGuinness has spoken out to reassure fans after being involved in a car accident on the set of the BBC series.
On Tuesday, The Sun reported that Paddy had crashed a new Lamborghini while filming in the Yorkshire Dales, after “losing control” of the vehicle.
Hours later, the former Take Me Out star shared a video on Instagram assuring his followers he was completely fine, albeit in need of “a cup of tea, a paracetamol and a good old cry”.
“It’s been a mad old day on Top Gear today, you might have seen that I had a bit of a shunt,” he said. “I finally got to drive one of my fantasy childhood cars, the Lamborghini Diablo.
“But it turns out 30-year-old supercars don’t like torrential rain. Who’d have thought?”
He continued: “If you’ve ever owned a Diablo or you’ve driven one you’ll know just as well as me, oh my God, she can be a cruel mistress, she can be a cruel mistress that one.
“That V12 lures you in and suddenly… it bites you. I’m totally fine. Fingers crossed we get the car running again because it is an absolute beauty.”
A spokesperson for Top Gear later said: “During Top Gear filming in North Yorkshire today, presenter Paddy McGuinness’s car skidded and left the road, coming to an almost immediate stop. Paddy was quickly taken to the production unit base for medical checks and is unhurt.
“No other vehicles were involved and the police, who had been monitoring filming, were quickly on the scene to assist.
“Safety on Top Gear is always the production team’s priority and the vehicle’s speed at the time was within the road’s limit of 60mph.”
Paddy joined Top Gear in 2018, alongside fellow new recruit Andrew Flintoff and existing host Chris Harris.
They replaced departing presenter Matt LeBlanc, who took over the show – as did short-lived co-presenter Chris Evans – when the BBC famously decided not to renew Jeremy Clarkson’s contract.
Filming on Top Gear resumed last week, when Paddy, Andrew and Chris sped through a specially-designed maze at theme park Alton Towers.
Although it’s not known when the show will be returning to our screens, the Top Gear website teased there would be more information “soon”.
