US comedian Pete Davidson has responded to ex-fiancée Ariana Grande’s public comments about their relationship.
Pete and Ariana began their high-profile relationship in May 2018, a few weeks after her split from rapper Mac Miller.
The two became engaged after a month, eventually calling it off in October of the same year, a month after the chart-topping singer learned the devastating news that her ex, Mac Miller, had died of an accidental drug overdose.
In an interview with Vogue published in July last year, Ariana described her relationship with Pete as an “amazing distraction” from other things going on in her life at that time.
“It was frivolous and fun and insane and highly unrealistic,” she said. “I loved him, and I didn’t know him. I’m like an infant when it comes to real life and this old soul, been-around-the-block-a-million-times artist. I still don’t trust myself with the life stuff.”
The Saturday Night Live comedian has now responded to his ex’s remarks about their relationship in his new Netflix stand-up special, Alive From New York.
Pete began by justifying talking about his past relationship, pointing out that several songs on Ariana’s Grammy-nominated album Thank U, Next are about him.
“She has her songs and stuff and this is what I have,” he explained. “You’re like, ’Pete, this isn’t fair. You’re airing out dirty laundry. How could you do that?
“‘Where did she say this stuff? To her friends in the confidence of her own home?’. No, she said it on the cover of Vogue magazine.”

Referencing the controversy surrounding Ariana’s skintone in her Vogue photo-shoot, he added: “Can you imagine if I did that? My career would be over tomorrow if I spray painted myself brown and hopped on the cover of Vogue magazine and just started shitting on my ex.
“Can you imagine if I did that shit? Like, ‘Yeah, I was just fucking her because I was bored and then Fortnite came out’.”
“Sometimes life is a little unfair,” he added. “My biggest fear is that I’m gonna get shot in the back of the head by a 9-year-old with a ponytail and the last thing I’m gonna hear is ‘#Cancelled’.”

A number of songs on Ariana’s most recent album reference her split from Pete, including the title track, Thank U, Next, on which she sings: “Even almost got married, and for Pete I’m so grateful.”
On the emotional ballad Ghostin, she is also heard singing about struggling with her grief towards the end of her relationship with the SNL star.
More recently, Ariana released How I Look On You, an album cut from the Charlie’s Angels soundtrack, which many fans speculated was actually a more shady look back at her engagement to Pete.
However, without referencing the song specifically, Ariana assured fans that the songs she contributed to Charlie’s Angels were not sung from “her point of view”.
“It’s not my pov or personal album,” she insisted on Twitter. “So it’s been cool putting together music that fits the energy of something that isn’t mine.”

He later insisted he had a 'damn good reason' for putting the brakes on her scheduled performance.
