Pete Hegseth faced backlash on social media after he offered a defiant statement to reporters about his scandal-ridden push to become secretary of defense.

“This will not be a process tried in the media. I don’t answer to anyone in this group. None of you, not to that camera at all,” he told reporters on Capitol Hill.

“I answer to President Trump, who received 76 million votes ... and a mandate for change,” he continued. “I answer to the 50 — the 100 senators who are part of this process and those in the committee. And I answer to my Lord and Savior, and my wife and my family.”

Hegseth is battling to keep his chances afloat amid mounting allegations of misconduct, including accusations of sexual impropriety, excessive drinking and financial mismanagement of two veterans nonprofits he ran.

President-elect Donald Trump is reportedly mulling other candidates to replace Hegseth, who was a Fox News host until Trump picked him for the Pentagon job last month.

His comment irked critics, who noted that he’s gunning for a job that is appointed by the president and confirmed by the Senate to serve the interests of the American public.

Not here to serve Americans, but rather to serve Trump. The perfect encapsulation of MAGA. https://t.co/IgR8CvvQzO

You pointed right at me Pete. You answer to us...the American people. We don't get to ask you questions but the media does. This pompous ass needs to get the fuck out of this game now. https://t.co/5WgiS8kEe0

Tell me you fundamentally misunderstand public service in 1 minute or less... https://t.co/BdtLVYjJ5x

Actually the entire point of being a public servant is serving the public… https://t.co/uTzAT4kn85

I still have no idea what makes anyone think this guy is capable of managing an organization with almost three million employees when he ran an organization with fewer than ten employees into the ground in the space of a couple of years. https://t.co/8OFw9DJnkd

Trump's Defense Secretary does not answer to the American people. Got that, @FoxNews? https://t.co/6HEVEKmgiD

You know what I find super trustworthy in a public servant? When they are defensive and aggressive with the press while saying they don’t answer to them. Please, look directly into the camera and tell me again who you work for? https://t.co/nnQ3fb9q4G

The whole point in being a public servant is to answer to the public. But go off. https://t.co/ArJzCvEQ0g
