Piers Morgan has hit out at those “spewing their gleeful joy” at US president Donald Trump’s coronavirus diagnosis.

Trump revealed that he and his wife Melania had tested positive for Covid-19 in a tweet on Friday morning.

After the news made headlines across the globe, Piers took on those celebrating Trump’s diagnosis, calling the people wishing him dead “despicable”.

The Good Morning Britain host tweeted: “Interesting to see those who’ve spent the last few years screaming that Trump’s an uncaring, heartless empathy-devoid b*stard now spewing their gleeful joy that he & his wife have a deadly virus,

“They’re no better than the man they loathe.”

As someone replied to Piers suggesting the “terrible mess” the US was in as a result of coronavirus is because of its leader, the presenter responded: “Nobody’s been more critical of Trump over Covid than me.

“But I don’t want him or his wife to die from it. Those who do are despicable.”

Another wished Trump a full recovery, but said they were “still going to point out he’s a fool for catching it after six months of mocking people for wearing masks”, to which Piers replied: “That’s fine. It’s the ecstatic glee I am witnessing that is so distasteful & hypocritical from those who preach about tolerance and kindness.

“We saw the same when Boris Johnson nearly died. It’s vile.”

Trump and Melania have now begun quarantining, with the president tweeting that they will “get through this TOGETHER!”.

Dr. Sean Conley, physician to the president, also claimed Trump would continue to “carry out his duties without disruption while recovering”.

The first lady also tweeted, confirming that both she and the president had tested positive as had “too many Americans... this year.”

She added: “We are feeling good and I have postponed all upcoming engagements. Please be sure you are staying safe and we will all get through this together.”
