If you’re still on cloud nine from tying the knot, but don’t quite have the bank balance (or holiday days left) for a 10-day honeymoon in the Maldives, look into a mini moon instead.

Savvy newlyweds are opting for miniature honeymoons, in the form of weekend getaways or city breaks, that allow you a sunny escape while you excitedly save up for the real deal later on.

Algarve, Portugal

The Algarve might be well known for its golf resorts, but there is a quieter side to the southernmost tip of Portugal, according to Cho. There are plenty of more authentic spots to mooch around and explore. Stroll along the Via Algarviana to enjoy the picturesque landscape covered in wild flowers or soak up the rays at Costa Vicentina, an unspoiled national park that’s known for its water sports.

If you and your partner love nature and the great outdoors, head to the Lake District for a romantic weekend escape. A UNESCO world heritage site, it makes a beautiful spot for cosy nights in along boating, cycling and walking tours. Stop off at the many country pubs on the way. Sharrow Bay is a must-see recommends Cho, which if you didn’t know if the home of the sticky toffee pudding.

Calabria, Italy

Head to southwest Italy to the coast of Calabria for a beach based mini-moon. Spend a long weekend exploring the sandy beaches, Greek ruins and fresh seafood on offer and come back with an enviable glow.

Cotswolds, England

Spend a tranquil few days in the Cotswolds for a low-key romantic retreat, says Cho. Pay a visit to The Lygon Arms, a four star hotel and spa nestled in the quiet town of Broadway and treat yourself to a massage (or two). While you’re there, take a trip to Blenheim Palace and marvel at the architecture and stunning scenery.

Barcelona, Spain

“Barcelona is an ideal mini moon destination for foodies and culture focused travellers alike,” Cho says She recommends visiting the world famous Picasso museum and Gaudi’s opulent architecture. Feast on all the food at one the city’s markets.

Saint Paul de Vence, France

A highlight for Cho is St. Paul de Vence, one of the oldest towns on the French Riviera. Home to many modern and contemporary museums and galleries, it’s perfect for a cultured couple. Meander through the stairways on the Rue Grande and enjoy the baroque opulence in the Château Grimaldi.

Copenhagen, Denmark

A bustling hub of culture and cuisine, there’s no shortage of things to do: the open-air shows, flowes gardens and abundance of restaurants at Tivoli are all worth a visit. For a chilled out day, visit the neighbourhood of Vesterbro, brimming with wine bars and flower shops.
