What makes a leader?
I sit and hypothesize,
While Corbyn and Smith
Fight as they "moralise".
Does leadership lie
In slicked-back hair?
Is it pulling a pint
Or "showing you care"?
Churchill was a leader,
That's what they say.
But with the war over,
They kept him at bay.
Wilson (with overcoat),
The machine, the statistician,
Slowly but surely
Had to deal with division.
"The Iron Lady"
Is what they called Thatcher.
Then her own party
Up and back stabbed her.
Blair, in his day,
Had all the fame.
Now it's frowned on
To mention his name.
All were PMs,
All "did their bit",
And every one
Took hit after hit.
For, to be a leader,
Equals scrutiny and criticism,
Sometimes betrayal,
Or a large dose of cynicism.
What makes a leader?
I no longer know.
And yet, it seems,
We know when they should go.
So let Smith and Corbyn
Knock each other down.
I wouldn't be in their shoes,
Not for a crown.
