Richard Madden has teased what’s in store for the second series of Bodyguard, but it sounds as though fans are in for a bit of a wait.
Ever since the hit BBC drama came to an end last year, there’s been a lot of speculation about whether it will be given a follow-up series, and while both Richard and its creator Jed Merucurio have expressed interest in a second run, they’re in agreement that it isn’t something they should rush into.
“You cannot jump into it,” he told PA. “David Budd definitely needs a vacation after that. He’s not going to go back to work, is he?
“And also he’s the most famous man in London because of what happens at the end of episode six. He couldn’t just go straight back into work.”
He added: “Me and Jed both agree that there’s something much more interesting in ‘let’s catch up with him 18 months later, two years later after this has happened and say ‘where is he now? What’s happened to him?’.”
Bodyguard proved to be a hit on both sides of the Atlantic, and there’s even been speculation about whether Richard Madden could be about to step into Daniel Craig’s shoes as 007 as a result.
Meanwhile, there’s still been plenty of Jed Mercurio drama for viewers to enjoy in Bodyguard’s absence, with the series finale of his other hit show, Line Of Duty, becoming the most-watched TV show of 2019 when it aired last week.
A sixth season has already been commissioned by the BBC, but as the show usually takes a two-year break between series, viewers shouldn’t expect to see the new episodes until at least 2021.
