Production on the upcoming series of Riverdale has been halted, following the news of Luke Perry’s death.

Although best known for his role in the 90s teen show Beverly Hills 90210, Luke won over a whole new legion of fans when he joined the cast of Riverdale, which airs on Netflix in the UK, and on The CW over in America.

On Monday, it was confirmed by The Hollywood Reporter that production had been suspended on the hit show to allow its cast and crew to grieve the loss of their co-star and friend.

A joint statement from Warner Bros, The CW and executive producers Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa, Greg Berlanti, Sarah Schechter and Jon Goldwater issued to the publication said: “We are deeply saddened to learn today about the passing of Luke Perry.

“A beloved member of the Riverdale, Warner Bros. and CW family, Luke was everything you would hope he would be: an incredibly caring, consummate professional with a giant heart, and a true friend to all.

“A father figure and mentor to the show’s young cast, Luke was incredibly generous, and he infused the set with love and kindness. Our thoughts are with Luke’s family during this most difficult time.”
