Anyone who was looking forward to the new series of Supermarket Sweep but had concerns about food wastage can breathe a sigh of relief.

The popular 90s show, which sees contestants trying to fill their trolley in a bid to win prizes in a mock supermarket, is set to return to our screens next month, with Rylan Clark-Neal taking over from Dale Winton at the helm.

Speaking about the revival on This Morning, Rylan revealed that real packaged food is used on the show, but insisted that it doesn’t go to waste when the cameras stop rolling.

“For TV purposes we want it to be looking pristine but there’s still three, four, five weeks on that fresh produce so we donate it. All the food is real, we replenish it every three or four days and all of the products that are perishable but still best before they don’t go to waste.”

He also joked that certain products might have come home with him at the end of filming, though, commenting: “I haven’t been shopping for weeks. It’s fantastic. It’s real stuff, so I’m in hairspray for life.”

Rylan previously teased that the series would feature a nod to its previous host, Dale Winton, who died last year at the age of 62.

The new series of Supermarket Sweep debuts on ITV2 on 9 September, while This Morning airs every weekday from 10.30am.
