Shocking footage has been released of the moment a man was thrown into the air after being struck by a car during a hit-and-run in Norfolk, which police are treating as attempted murder.

Detectives are trying to identify the vehicle and driver involved after CCTV captured a dark coloured car driving straight into a 30-year-old man as he crossed Vicarage Car Park in North Walsham, with two friends.

The footage clearly shows the man being thrown into the air upside down and landing on the ground.

Officers said the victim was knocked 15ft from the point of impact to where he landed.

The footage then shows the car, believed to be a blue Peugeot 307, circuit the car park and drive at the man for a second time, but he moves out of the way.

He was taken to Norfolk and Norwich Hospital where he remains in a stable condition. The hit-and-run left him with a broken pelvis and serious leg injuries, police said.

Norfolk Constabulary are treating the incident, which happened at 12.55am on Saturday July 23, as attempted murder.

Following the incident the car made off from the car park at speed towards Bacton Road, officers said.

Detective Chief Inspector Stu Armes said: “The footage we have released today is shocking and I appreciate some people could find it distressing.

“However it reflects the seriousness of the incident and how it could have had potentially fatal consequences for the victim.

“The victim has suffered serious injuries and has been left extremely distressed by his ordeal.

“Whilst the motivation for the incident remains unclear, we are treating it as attempted murder and at this time we believe it is an isolated incident.”

Armes said: “We are appealing to the public to assist us with our investigation. We have made a number of inquiries so far, however, we are keen to locate the car involved in this collision and would appeal for anyone who may know of its whereabouts to contact police.”

The detective said he wants to identify the driver of the car and also up to three other people who were passengers in the vehicle. One of them was female, he said.

Norfolk Constabulary have asked anyone with information to contact Great Yarmouth CID on 101, quoting Op Kew, or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.
