British people should avoid all but essential travel to Sri Lanka following Sunday’s terrorist attacks, the Foreign Office said.
More than 350 people were killed in a wave of bombings at churches and hotels on Easter Sunday, including at least eight British nationals.
Officials have said the risk of further terrorist attacks in the South Asian country is high and that targets could include sites popular with tourists.
The foreign secretary, Jeremy Hunt, said that the new advice came after updated information and amid an ongoing security operation.
Hunt said: “Our hope is that it will be possible to change this when the current security operation has concluded. My first priority will always be the security of British citizens living and travelling abroad.
“We all hope the situation will return to normal very soon, and that the Sri Lankan tourism industry is able to get back on its feet following the terrorist attacks. We will do all we can to help the Sri Lankan authorities in the meantime.”
Sunday’s attacks saw suspected suicide bombers strike in the capital Colombo, Negombo and Batticaloa.
The latest advice on the government’s website for those in Sri Lanka includes:
- remain vigilant, keep up to date with developments and follow the advice of local security authorities and hotel security staff;
- keep a low profile, avoid crowded public places, large gatherings (including religious gatherings and places of worship) and any demonstrations;
- avoid travelling during periods of curfew (other than to/from the airport);
- keep in touch with family and friends, ensuring they are aware of any plans you may have.
