Stormzy has been celebrating after landing his first ever UK Singles Chart number one, with new track Vossi Bop.

After a week-long battle, which saw him go up against the likes of Taylor Swift, the rapper nabbed the top spot with the help of record breaking streaming figures.

The British star, who is preparing to headline Glastonbury, clocked up 12.7 million listens via services including Spotify – which is the biggest week of streams for a rapper and the fifth biggest streaming week of all time.

The record was previously held by Drake.

Stormzy told OfficialCharts.com: “Words don’t really do it justice. I’m genuinely, for once in my life, speechless.

“My supporters have had my back like crazy – this is all you guys, thank you so much.”

Posting on Instagram, he praised producer Chris Andoh, writing: “Thank you bro and my brother VOSSI the inspiration and soul for this tune.

“2 years out the game, recording and perfecting my craft and I’ve come back to the craziest welcome I could ever wish for I appreciate you guys you’ve changed my life for the 1928373393 time.” [sic]

Previous number one Old Town Road by Lil Nas X dropped to second place in the chart, while Taylor Swift’s Me!, featuring Brendon Urie, debuted in third.

Stormzy will become one of the few acts to headline Glastonbury after releasing just one album when the festival takes place again this June.

Speaking last month, he hit back at haters and promised to deliver an “iconic” Pyramid Stage set.

“If you think I got booked for Glastonbury headline to come there and not give you an iconic headline performance, you’ve gone crazy,” he said, during an appearance on BBC 1Xtra.

“There were so many doubters being like, ‘Oh he hasn’t got no number one song’ or, ‘Oh he’s got one album out, he’s not ready’.

“I’m there because I’m a serious musician.”
